Flock is a piece of music composed as an entry for the Kronos Quartet Under 30 Project. The piece is a literal sonification of a virtual flock of birds. Within the flock, individual musical agents congregate around common pitches and rhythmic patterns by simply attempting to move closer together. No single agent knows where every agent is on the scale. Each looks within a few pitches above or below its current phrase, and moves up or down toward other agents near it. The resulting piece represents a very dynamic, unscripted interaction between individual members of the flock, providing an audio representation of emergent behavior.
